Active. Engaged. committed.
I've spent 26 years as a journalist, starting in Newsweek's letters department in New York City. Today I direct Environmental Health Sciences, a nonpartisan, nonprofit news and science service exists to drive good science into public discussion on our health and environment.
I was elected in 2015 and have learned that Trustees need to listen, first and foremost. We serve as a bridge between what education experts say they need to educate our children and what our community demands of our education system. Sometimes those can be in conflict, as in the debate over opening our schools in the pandemic. I try hard to listen to the science while also ensuring all the sides are being heard.
I've served as the district's liaison on the Bozeman Area Pedestrian and Traffic Safety Commission, helping ensure our kids have safe routes to school. I've co-directed the Bridger Ski Foundation's Nordic Youth Ski League, getting 140+ children out on skis, learning to love snow. That was fun.
I've been married for 20 years to Stephanie Ewing, a professor in Montana State University's College of Agriculture. We've got two astonishing kids: Georgianna, an 18-year-old Bozeman High School grad who now skis for University of New Hampshire, and Phineas, a 16-year-old BHS sophomore.
I've got six chickens and an under-employed blue heeler. I'm learning to play piano, and right now Chopin is giving me fits.
My wife and I have been in Bozeman since 2010, but our family has deep roots in the Gallatin Valley: Stephanie's grandfather was Roland Renne, president of MSU from 1943 to 1964. I've also got experience volunteering in schools and covering school boards, city commissions and local and state government in Alaska, California, Colorado.

That's Georgi, Stephanie and me on a spring ride. Chilly but fun.

"Douglas is patient, thoughtful, a good communicator, and has what is best for our children uppermost in mind. His service on the School Board is a valuable asset to our whole community."
